The Story

OHARA KOSON TWO CRANES

Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist, known for woodblock prints focused on nature, particularly birds and animals.

Originally a painter, Ohara’s printmaking was part of Shin Hanga (New Print), a movement which revived the tradition of Japanese woodblock prints.

His exceptional skill resulted in works that resembled watercolors with details that mimicked fine brushwork. This is especially notable in Two Cranes, where the background, grasses, water, and Cranes blend effortlessly.
