We think of snowmen as simple figures mostly built by children, but they have been around since the Middle Ages. At that time, they were intricate sculptures made by artists, and frequently a medium for social and political commentary. A legendary snowman was created in Florence in 1464 when Piero di Medici ordered Michelangelo to build one in his courtyard.
